I am always trying to stay in the know. I mean, there is nothing worse than someone who has no idea what’s going on in the world. For this reason, I make it a point to read through local and national papers each morning and afternoon. I also do my best to catch a news program here and there. Yay me!

I have recently come to the realization that I can’t take any more news. I don’t want to hear about horrible mothers and the graphic details of what they did to their children. I don’t want to hear about dog fighting or bum fighting or bully fighting! I can’t take another story about tragic death or human cruelty. What is the fascination? I just don’t understand. It leaves me lying awake at night.

Mr. M2C and I were watching Storage Wars the other night (YYYYYYEEEEEPPPP!) and there was a commercial for a show called Beyond Scared Straight. I guess it’s about “bad kids” that spend sometime in prison so they see that may not be the road to continue down. I’m all for a good lesson, don’t get me wrong but this show completely crosses the line. The commercial shows an inmate in the face of a CHILD telling him in so many words that he is the type of guy that he would force to have sex if he were in prison. When is it EVER ok or appropriate for that matter for a grown adult man to to threaten a child with rape?!

What are we thinking?! This is entertainment?! I have no doubt that these kids are on the wrong path and 99% of the time they are asses BUT at the end of the day…they are children. They need something and I’m pretty sure it’s not being walked through a prison while inmates cat call them. What psychological damage is being done to these kids during the filming of this show? Are are these kids altered by this experience? I don’t think it does anything more than harden them, taking what little innocence they may have had left.

My family is always laughing at me because I watch prime time dramas filled with housewives, teenagers, and hot doctors. They may be shallow but I never lose any sleep over them. I’m not sure when good entertainment became sad, scary, serious and heartbreaking but I won’t be indulging. My heart is too heavy with the wrongs of the world.

Apparently, the latest episode takes a 13 year old GIRL and puts her in close proximity to MALE prisoners who threaten to gang rape her. I’m sorry, but someone needs to go to jail for that unforgivable travesty. There is absolutely NOTHING redeeming about a show that wold expose a child to gang rape threats.
