Welcome to Football Friday! Every Friday I pick a game from the Sunday lineup and provide you with recipes for food and cocktails to entertain your family and friends during the game.

This is week 1! We are all excited for football over here at our house. Fantasy teams are drafted, jersey’s are washed and the trash talking has commenced! Week 1 starts on September 11, 2011 which as all of us are painfully aware of is the 10th anniversary of the attack on the world trade center. This puts us in an especially patriotic mood this weekend and what a better way to show it than by watching some good ol’ American football.

With that said the game of the week is the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Baltimore Ravens. Break out your terrible towels folks because this is going to be a great game. These two cities also provide us with some amazing food choices so without further ado, here is your game day menu!

There is a great line in Wedding Crashers that goes like this, “Crabcakes and football, that’s what Maryland does!” Well this week we are using this line as inspiration for our menu and serving Maryland Crabcakes! These are easy to make up and are always a big hit.

Maryland Crab Cakes

1 lb. Crab meat
1/4 c. Mayonnaise
2 T. Parsley, minced
1/2 t. Salt
1/2 c. Soft bread crumbs (I use Italian seasoned)
2 Eggs, beaten
5 drops Tabasco sauce
fine cracker crumbs
1 stick Butter (can substitute margarine or oil)

Combine all ingredients except crumbs and butter and mix together lightly. Form into desired size cakes but do not pack firmly then pat lightly with cracker crumbs. Chill for an hour so they are easier to handle.

Heat butter in a large skillet and fry cakes until golden brown on all sides. Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.

We have to represent from Pittsburgh too! What better way to do that then serving up “Rothlesburgers”…slider style!

“Rothlesburger” Sliders

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb bulk pork sausage
  • onion slider buns
  • cooked bacon chopped into bacon bits
  • sliced cheddar cheese
  • sliced provolone cheese
  • barbecue sauce
  • ranch dressing
  • Salt/Pepper
Combine the ground beef and the pork sausage in a large bowl with a dash of salt and pepper. Mix well. Pat out your slider patties and don’t forget to dimple the center so they don’t swell too much during cooking. Place you patties in the fridge to chill before cooking. Grill patties to well done (They contain pork and it MUST be cooked through!!). During that last minutes of cooking add the cheddar and provolone cheese to the top of the patty. Now it’s time to assemble your sliders…bun, BBQ Sauce, Patty, Bacon Bits, Ranch, Top Bun…ENJOY!
These are two staples that will carry your game day menu but you can’t have a football get-together without a cocktail!!

Black and Gold

  • 2 oz Blavod vodka
  • 1 oz Goldschlager
  1. Pour the Blavod into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake well.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Top with Goldschlager.
If you are looking for something a little less….fancy from the steel town, try this!

Pittsburgh Sunrise

2 oz vodka
4 oz Sprite® soda
2 oz peach papaya juice

Stir and pour over ice in a high ball glass.

We can’t forget about Baltimore and this week they are packing quite a punch and I’m not just talking about on the football field! If you dare, the…

Baltimore Zoo

1 shot vodka
1 shot light rum
1 shot gin
1 shot triple sec
1 shot Southern Comfort® peach liqueur
1 shot amaretto almond liqueur
1 shot grenadine syrup
1 dash sweet and sour mix
1 splash beer
Add the liquors and grenadine to a highball glass with ice. Top off with sweet and sour mix, add a splash of beer, and stir.
This is going to be a great year of football, I can feel it! There is no better way to enjoy the game than with family, friends and good food. Now get shopping! You’ve got football food to make this Sunday! I hope you’ll share some of your favorite football traditions and come back next Friday for Week 1 results and yummy week 2 menu!
