I know this is a day late. I apologize but time just slipped away from me this week with the kids being sick and my mom in town. OK, enough with the excuses and on to the food!

Week 3 brings us a game between two teams with a great history. They are also known for their die hard fans. There has been some great food so far this season but I think this week is going to take the cake! I once heard that Wisconsin has 3 food groups, beer, brats and cheese. Pair that with the fact that Chicago is best known for it’s pizza and you’ve got one delicious football menu! This week we are keeping it simple and family friendly!

The guys have been off the hook for the last couple of weeks and it’s time for them to fire up the grill. Put those boys to work!

Drunken Brats

  • 4 cans beer
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 10 bratwurst
  • 2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Put the beer and the onions in a large pot and bring it to a boil. Add the seasoning; red pepper flakes, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Give it a stir. Add your brats to the liquid. Reduce your heat to medium and cook about 10 minutes. Next remove the brats, reduce the beer and onions to low and continue cooking. Meanwhile, start cooking your brats on the grill for about 5-10 minutes.
These are great on hoagie rolls! Use the onions for topping and throw on a piece of cheese.
Nothing says Chicago like pizza! Pizza is a great way to include the kids and because they are so versatile, everyone loves them. Doesn’t the saying go “even bad pizza is good!” Let the kids get in on this one and make their own. They get to cook and for the most part it won’t be too messy. I can almost guarantee they won’t be as messy as the guys!

Personal Pizza

  • 1-2 tubes of Ready to bake pizza dough (Biscuit section of the store)
  • 4-6 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 jar of pizza sauce
  • Loads of pizza toppings! (Pepperoni, sweet Italian sausage, onions, peppers, pineapple…The list goes on and on!)
Once you spread out the pizza dough into a large square, cut it into 4 sections. This will make smaller personal size pizza’s that everyone will love. Follow the baking directions on your pizza dough and voila!
Now for dessert. Just as classic as a meeting between two historic, all-American teams…is the root beer float. Sweet, frosty and fun; it’s a dessert everyone can agree on no matter which team you are cheering for.

All-American Root Beer Floats

  • 1 tub of vanilla ice cream
  • 6 bottles of root beer (chilled. I like to put mine in a cooler of ice)
  • 1 Can of Whipped Cream
  • 1 Jar of Maraschino Cherries
  • 6 Mugs
First, run your mugs under water and put them in the freezer until you are ready to use them (at least an hour). This is also a great time to put your root beer in a cooler of ice. When you are ready to make your floats, pull your mug out of the freezer and fill with 2-3 scoops of vanilla ice cream (depending on the size of your mugs). Next, pop open a bottle of ice cold root beer and start slowly pouring it into the mug. Pour slowly so you don’t get a glass of nothing but foam. Once your glass is full, top with whipped cream and a cherry. I often use a bendy straw to complete the look.
Enjoy time with your family on this first weekend of Fall! See you next Friday!
