Black Friday, the Superbowl of retail is one of my favorite days of the year. I start planning it out a couple weeks in advance. We always eat Thanksgiving dinner a bit early and then I shower, gear up and head to the toy store. I know everyone thinks of black friday as this crazy, loud event that no person in their right mind would take part in. I look at it as my mom moment. A time when I can go out and work at getting something great for my kids. It’s not the end of the world if I don’t get something, so it’s like a game. A game I love playing.

I usually find one item that I wasn’t planning on buying but it’s a great deal and will be a huge hit on Christmas morning. This year, I chose a doll. A doll that was not on Ansley’s wish list but I thought she would love it since she has been getting more and more into pretend play with her other dolls.

Since I was #6 in line, I secured one of the dolls for a great price, more than half off! When I came home with my loot, I showed Mr. M2C and he was equally excited and convinced that Ansley would love it. I was a proud shopper.

The next day we were out and about shopping and we happened to pass one of the dolls in the store. Mr. M2C, wanting to test the waters, says to Ansley “Hey! Look at that cool doll! Maybe you should put that on your Christmas list”. Ansley whips her head around, hair flying and says “Ewww! Not that doll! It poops! Don’t even talk to me about that doll that poops and pees! Gross!”

I was not expecting such a strong reaction. Trying to save my black friday score, I said “Yeah but that’s JUST like a real baby! That would be cool, right?”. She was not buying it. She said “Would you quit talking to me about poop?! It’s so gross!”

Suddenly I realized their had been a shift in the universe. For the last 4 1/2 years I had been put through the ringer with poop and pee conversation. Bodily functions have become second nature. But now, potty talk is embarrassing her! I never understood why parents got any joy out of embarrassing their kids but now I know…it’s so much fun! It’s the best payback in the world!

So it turns out my big black friday score was a big black friday bust! Normally when I buy something and it doesn’t work out, I get a small amount of joy from returning it and getting all of the money back. This time, I can’t even enjoy that because I got such a great deal, I’m not getting that much money back. At least I have my new mom power…EMBARRASSMENT!

That is soooo funny! I don’t do black friday shopping because I hate crowds (I hate normal shopping, lol) but I’m going through similar things… having to guess at what my 3-year-old daughter likes and hoping she likes it. She isn’t really into dolls but I’m really tempted to get her a Melissa and Doug doll… I think she’d like it! But I don’t know if I want to risk having her just ignore it, lol. I once got her a Little Mommy Play All Day Doll (it was actually something a company sent me for review) and she HATED it. Refused to play with it, hated that it talked, and would literally walk around it giving it a suspicious look. She played with a little doll that didn’t make noise, though. She just did not like that talking doll. Kids. lol

Kids are so funny! I guess you can never tell for sure what they are going to like or not.
