Here’s Your Sign!

We moved to our current city a year ago. It is a beautiful city with nice quiet neighborhoods. The city works hard to keep everything looking beautiful. One of the cities “rules” is that businesses cannot display corporate signs towards the street or on the building. The buildings in every shopping center have the same font, in the same color no matter how big the business is. All of this makes for some pretty shopping centers. There are no giant signs with obnoxious colors. Everything is peaceful and non threatening…just the way us middle class suburbanites like it…right?…right?!

There is one teensy tiny problem with this system however; you can’t find ANYTHING! I am forced to rely on my phones GPS and sometimes she doesn’t know her behind from a hole in the ground! The light brown lettering all blends together. I feel like I am walking down one of those long corridors in a medical building staring at one bronze plaque after another.

I find myself identifying shopping centers by their foliage or the presence of a particular gas station. “The one I am looking for has a white barked birch on the corner….THERE! Turn right now!” If you were ever wondering why people drive so badly in Florida, it’s not their lack of ability…it’s the lack of signage in their neighborhood!

Wordless Wednesday – Pumpkin Patch

In honor of Halloween coming up…very soon; here is a picture of Ansley and Cole at the pumpkin patch. They were not amused with sitting in the sun for a picture, hence the squinting.

Cinnamon Roll Cookies

I have been on a serious cinnamon roll kick lately. But I can’t possibly eat one more cinnamon roll! So I found a roll cookie recipe and made some changes. These cookies turned out really yummy and surprisingly easy.

Cookie Mix

3/4 cups butter, softened

1/2 cup sugar

1 egg yolk

1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 tsp. salt

1 1/2 cups flour

Cream together the butter and sugar. When it’s mixed well, add the egg yolk (make sure you save the egg white for the cookie filling) and vanilla. Then add the salt and flour. Mix until everything is well blended. The dough will be a bit crumbly, like a sugar cookie dough. Shape the dough into a disc and wrap in plastic wrap. Put the dough in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Don’t leave it long enough to get hard. You only want it firm….Mind out of the gutter people! Back to the cookies!

Cookie Insides

1/4 cup sugar

1 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon

Mix together and set aside. Next, add 1 Tbsp of water to your egg white and mix. Set aside.

Remove your cookie dough from the freezer and place it between two sheets of parchment paper. Roll it out to approximately a 9×12 rectangle. This part is kind of tough. Stick with it! Remove the top sheet of parchment paper and using a pastry brush, brush the egg white wash over the dough until it is completely covered. Begin sprinkling the cinnamon sugar over the dough covering the entire surface.

This is where you will want to start rolling the dough into a log. Be careful! The dough is sticky! I found it helpful to keep my fingers covered in flour as I rolled and I used the bottom piece of parchment paper to roll the dough. Once you have a log, be sure to pinch the ends so it doesn’t unroll. Wrap the log in plastic wrap and return to the freezer. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from freezer and slice log into 1″ cookies. Place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes or until the bottom starts to brown. The longer you cook them, the crispier they will be.

I added a sprinkle of cinnamon to some cinnamon roll icing I had lying around and covered half of the cookies with it once they had cooled a few minutes. The cookies were amazing with and without the icing!

This is a perfect cookie as the weather turns cooler and it is also perfect to make the dough ahead of time and bake when you need them! Enjoy!

Moody Monday is Coming

Why is it that when the seasons change, so do our moods, attitudes and energy levels? Here I am on Sunday night at the end of another long week. I have put off things I wanted to get done, procrastinated to the point of no return and all I want to do is sleep. Being a bear would be nice. Fill up on food and head into a warm cozy hole for a few months.

My kids never seem to get the memo about me being in hibernation mode. It’s the opposite really, they seem to be bursting with energy! Someone once told me that if I was feeling tired that I should go for a run…Am I the only person who thinks that is something a crazy person would say?! I mean I don’t want to shuffle to the kitchen for caffeine much less put on shoes and…and…run…

I suppose I will just try to hibernate for the night and start fresh in the morning! What do you do to stay motivated as the seasons change?

DIY Beauty Tricks From Around the World

My kids are getting older. By that I mean that I no longer have to carry them, rock them to sleep , change their diaper or feed them. The days of spit-up down my bra are long gone and my excuse for looking like a homeless crazy person is quickly slipping away. I have been looking for some beauty tricks that I can do at home without having to pay a fortune and find someone to watch the kids.

I think using Sunday as my own personal spa day sounds like a great idea. It might actually make me feel human for the week ahead!

The first tip comes from the Island of Jamaica. Even though I am long past puberty, I still get a pesky pimple every once in a while. Mostly caused by stress…with a husband, 2 kids, a dog, a cat, a business start-up and a blog, I’m not sure why I’m not covered in pimples!

Mix baking soda with water to make a paste. Dab the paste onto any pimple you have. If your skin is on the dry side, you can add a bit of Vitamin E. The baking soda paste draws dirt and oil to the surface as it hardens and the vitamin E hydrates the skin and infuses it with antioxidants to prevent aging.

The next tip comes from Greece! Since chopping my hair off a couple of years ago and then regretting it when it took over two years to grow back, I am VERY protective of my hair. Having heard a lot about how shampoo isn’t that great for your locks, I was excited to hear about this tip.

Boil sprigs of fresh rosemary in water. Let it cool and strain out the rosemary, then pour over your hair. The rosemary deep cleans and removes build-up from your hair, leaving it shiny and bouncy. This is a great once a week treatment to let your hair rest and rejuvenate.

Turkish women have been a lifesaver for me. Living in south Florida, I wear flip flops…A LOT! It is near impossible for me to keep my heels smooth…until now…

Add course sea salt to your regular lotion and use it on dry feet. The salt and the lotion work as an amazing scrub to remove dry, dead skin.

Women in Singapore have a few beauty tricks worth trying. First they make a fresh skin mask out of either avocado or papaya. The avocado is packed with nourishing oils and the papaya has wonderful Papain, which is an exfoliating enzyme. They also have a nightly hair ritual for combating frizz. They coat the ends of their with coconut oil and leave it on while they sleep. In the morning, no frizz!

Now that summer is over and the holidays are on their way, it’s time to break out the red polish! The only problem with red polish is that it tends to stick around longer than pumpkin pie on my hips. A beauty secret from France (where red polish is most popular) is soaking your fingertips in warm water with lemon juice. This makes the yellow tinge from the red polish disappear!

Who has more luxurious hair than Italian women? The final beauty tip will help you protect your hair from harsh weather as well as boost shine. Whip two egg whites until they make a frothy mousse. Wet your hair and apply the egg whites all over. Leave it on for 10 minutes, shampoo, rinse and DONE!

I am ready to add these simple DIY beauty tricks to my routine. There is nothing like a spa day to get you looking and feeling your best!

Do you have any secret beauty tricks?

Decorating Roadblock

I am excited to announce that I am back at full strength as far as my laptop goes. The dog decided to chew through my cord last week and I have been trying to conserve power while still getting work done. I was waiting not so patiently for my new liteon power supply to arrive and now that it has, I’m back in business!

Since my computer has been down, I have had to find other non-computer related projects to work on. I decided decorating the house was a priority since we have some unfinished projects. One year ago we moved into this house…our house…our first house. We had so many big ideas and plans. Mr. M2C was ready to conquer his land! We have quite a bit of grass between our house and the lake we live on so of course Mr. M2C wanted to make his first big purchase a gravely zero turn mower. The idea of driving a big machine AND cutting the grass was very exciting to him. We quickly figured out that not all of the grass was OURS to cut and it become increasingly clear that we should just hire a gardener. Finally, all of my nagging paid off and we hired one. Once we finalized that we moved inside.

We have been working on the living room and the kitchen which have all been fairly easy. We were lucky in that the house had new wood floors and new lowes fans. After we put up some paint and curtains, things started coming together.

Now I want to tackle the master bedroom. This one has stumped me. I want it to be soft and romantic but not overly girly. I actually want Mr. M2C to sleep in there. We have some pieces that are black but what to put with them?

I trust that you will steer me in the write direction. I’m ready for suggestions!
